A few thoughts about theatre & Performance:
I agree with anthropologist Victor Turner when he says that, “A performance is declarative of our shared humanity . . .” I fully believe the study and performance of theatre is integral to any community because it fosters self-expression, provides a platform for raising consciousness, and it unites people on a deep and emotional level. It is a purposeful pursuit which increases our understanding of being in the world. It has the ability to both raise our awareness of our unique individuality and our deep innate connectivity. Theatre provides feelings of communitas and catharsis that are increasingly difficult to come by in a time that is dominated with globalization, instant gratification, online anonymity, and a steadily decreasing appreciation of human contact. I am very passionate about the importance of theatre arts and its ability to enact positive changes. It brings to light what is beautiful and ugly in our world and encourages us to get out there and participate in our humanity!
